Rumors have been circulating about a purported PlayStation Phone being under development at Sony HQ lately but the company has yet to make an official statement regarding its existence. Last week, though, during the company's several conference calls, a worthy quote from Sony executives was translated as (via VentureBeat):
"We started out with the PSP – that was our first mobile gaming console. But, since then, the market as you know has expanded into bigger arenas, in that gaming on mobile phones, gaming on tablets, gaming on all sorts of mobile devices.”
It is completely understandable why a company beholden to stockholders and an intricate network of entertainment subsidiaries wants to keep the wraps on their successor to the PSP as long as possible, but Sony did acknowledge the need to expand their consumer base in the future.
“Now, PSP being a proprietary platform, was more concentrated on, how do you say, [the] core gaming segment rather than the light gamer. But now we are addressing that market as well."
For the moment, that's as close to an official statement of a PlayStation Phone as we'll get. In the mean time, the question remains: would you guys care if such a thing came to market? What would a PlayStation branded phone need to provide to get you to switch from your iPhone, Droid, etc.?
