PlayStation-Certified Xperia PLAY Smartphone Revealed

PlayStation-Certified Xperia PLAY Smartphone Revealed
Sony Ericsson today announced the Xperia PLAY, the the world's first PlayStation certified smartphone.

At first glance it looks like a regular smartphone, however a simple slide reveals a digital D pad, two analog touch pads, two shoulder buttons and the four PlayStation buttons: circle, cross, square and triangle. Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor with a 1Ghz CPU and embedded Adreno GPU graphics processor deliver 60fps gaming and Web browsing with minimal power consumption.
Xperia PLAY will run on Gingerbread (version 2.3), the latest version of Google's Android platform. Being a PlayStation Certified device means it will have access to PlayStation game content provided through the PlayStation Suite, currently under development by Sony Computer Entertainment and due to launch later this calendar year.

Leading franchises coming to Xperia PLAY includes EA's Need For Speed, Sims 3 and a world-first multiplayer version of FIFA 10 for mobile. GLU Mobile/Activision will be bringing Guitar Hero while Gameloft's titles include Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell.
A pre-loaded application will enable users to easily discover and download titles that have been optimised for game play on Xperia PLAY, access recently played games and see information about the games they have downloaded.
Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY will be available globally in selected markets from March 2011.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play Reviewed Early

Just the other day we saw the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, codenamed Zeus, being Bluetooth certified and now we get to see even more of the device which doesn't hold many secrets anymore.

Taiwanese website ePrice published an early review of the PlayStation Phone having the model number R800i. The device runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and is powered by a 1GHz processor aided by the Adreno 205 GPU. We already know about the 4-inch-ish FWVGA screen with a resolution of 854 x 480 -- possibly TFT but the usage of the Bravia technology like on the Xperia Arc is not yet known - allegedly being as good as iPhone's Retina Display. Additionally, there's a five-megapixel camera at the back with LED flash, dual microphones for noise cancelling as well as two speakers - which will hopefully be able to deliver stereo sound.

The real beauty -- yes, some might argue -- stands in the slide-out Sony PSP Go-like gaming controls which, if popped open, make the device measure around 102mm in width (by the way, the device is approximately 120mm tall). The top-front of the device features a light sensor, proximity sensor as well as a front facing camera for video calling. Four buttons (Back, Menu, Home and Search) are placed at the bottom-front while there are two Left and Right buttons on the right side of the Xperia Play together with an up/down rocker.

Additionally, there's a 3.5mm headphone jack on the left together with the microUSB port for charging and syncing and a power button placed at the top of the smartphone. The SIM and microSD card slot are placed behind the plastic back cover and they seem to be both replaceable on the go, without the need to remove the battery, which by the way is one of 1,500mAh.

Sony Ericsson's own PlayStation Pocket launcher, which will most probably hold the list of available games, is present on the device but, as with previous appearances, it is still empty. So there you have it, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play which will most likely see its debut at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Check out also the two videos embedded below and let us know of your thoughts

Xperia Play to Get Super Bowl Ad Debut

Everyone has assumed that the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, formerly known unofficially as the PlayStation Phone, would be revealed at the upcoming Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona. But according to an ABC News Nightline special on Super Bowl advertisements, the Android-based gaming smartphone will be shown for the very first time on a much more grand stage — the Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl is the biggest television event of the year, demanding millions of dollars from advertisers vying for a mere 30 or 60-second TV spot to reach the most consumers possible for their advertising buck. Over 100 million people are expected to tune in to Sunday’s big game, and during the telecast, Sony Ericsson is apparently planning on taking advantage of the massive viewing audience by running a commercial for the Xperia Play smartphone.
During a segment on tonight’s episode of ABC News Nightline called “The Sign of the Times” focusing on Super Bowl ads, Sean Bryan, Group Creative Director for McCANN Worldgroup, revealed that he has been working on a new “top secret” TV spot set to debut during the Superbowl for a “new gaming phone from Sony Ericsson”. When asked why the project was such a big secret, Bryan replied:
Well, it’s the launch of a new product. We want people to know it’s coming, but we want them to wait to see the phone.
Sorry Sean, we’ve already seen it. Again and again. As evident by the snippets of footage shown during the segment, it’s the same commercial that was leaked earlier this week. A commercial that took 4 months of production including 9 days of shooting in Thailand.
Keep your eyes peeled during the Super Bowl to see the PlayStation Certified Sony Ericsson Xperia Play commercial live, or you can see it now by clicking here.

Sony Ericsson gives us an entirely new reason to celebrate the love month of February as they unveil Xperia Play. Finally, we're hearing -- and seeing -- something official about the much talked about PlayStation Phone.

Sony's PlayStation Phone finally gets Xperia, PlayStation logos

Sony's PlayStation Phone finally gets Xperia, PlayStation logos
We've heard of the mysterious, still-totally-unofficial PlayStation Phone running Android 2.2 in the past, but we'd also heard it could run 3.0 -- thing is, that was back before we knew Gingerbread would be 2.3, so it's possible that those 3.0 rumors ended up materializing as 2.3. Capiche? Anyhow, this is the first time we're seeing the Xperia Play (or Zeus Z1, or whatever it'll end up being called) running 2.3 in the wild, doing its thing next to a white Xperia X10 to give you an idea of scale. The lucky poster actually has two of the phones available, so they seem to be leaking out of factories in sufficient quantities now to suggest that it'll likely be announced soon -- or so we hope, anyway. CES? MWC? We'll know soon enough. Follow the break for the 2.3 evidence up close.

Also notable: these appear to be new hardware builds that feature refined touch surfaces -- notice the engraved circles -- along with PlayStation-themed and Xperia logos at the bottom (notice the telltale square, triangle, X, and circle shapes). The screen shots call out a model number of R800i, which has previously been associated with the Zeus... so this is definitely lining up nicely

PlayStation Phone Sony's Way of Addressing the "Light Gamer"

 from - http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com
Rumors have been circulating about a purported PlayStation Phone being under development at Sony HQ lately but the company has yet to make an official statement regarding its existence. Last week, though, during the company's several conference calls, a worthy quote from Sony executives was translated as (via VentureBeat):

"We started out with the PSP – that was our first mobile gaming console. But, since then, the market as you know has expanded into bigger arenas, in that gaming on mobile phones, gaming on tablets, gaming on all sorts of mobile devices.”

It is completely understandable why a company beholden to stockholders and an intricate network of entertainment subsidiaries wants to keep the wraps on their successor to the PSP as long as possible, but Sony did acknowledge the need to expand their consumer base in the future.

“Now, PSP being a proprietary platform, was more concentrated on, how do you say, [the] core gaming segment rather than the light gamer. But now we are addressing that market as well."

For the moment, that's as close to an official statement of a PlayStation Phone as we'll get. In the mean time, the question remains: would you guys care if such a thing came to market? What would a PlayStation branded phone need to provide to get you to switch from your iPhone, Droid, etc.?

Sony call strongly hints at PlayStation phone, tablet

from - http://www.electronista.com/
Sony during the call discussing its latest results has strongly hinted that the company is developing a PlayStation phone. Without mentioning the device itself, the company said the hardware would be delivered from the Network Services group that handles both computers and the PlayStation brand. It's also moving Sony Computer Entertainment, the PlayStation division, into the Sony City headquarters to "better incorporate" it with the planning teams for a mystery product.
Ericsson, half of Sony Ericsson, was said to be helping out on both smartphone and game devices
The company has never officially confirmed a PlayStation phone but has already dropped clues that it wants to add cellular access to the equation established by the PSP. Sony has tried unsuccessfully to position its 2004-era handheld against the iPod, but it has had no answer to the iPhone with gaming a focus only on basic phones. The PlayStation phone is so far known to be a fast Android slider with PSP Go controls in place of a keyboard and its own PlayStation store
