Sony Ericsson Might Release a PlayStation Phone

A PlayStation-branded phone has been rumored to come to the market for quite a while now, years maybe, though there has been no strong proof that such a device might actually be unveiled to the world, not until Sony Ericsson's president Hideki Komiyama stated in a recent interview with Financial Times that such a handset might happen at a certain point in the future.

For what it's worth, in case the Japanese-Swedish joint venture is serious about providing such a handset to the market, it will have great success among users, and the company could go up to the top in no time. “A PlayStation mobile, building on the Walkman and Cybershot phones, could happen,” stated Komiyama, and that might suggest that the phone maker has given it some thought and things might get moving after all.

On the other hand, Sony Ericsson's president doesn't say clearly that such a PlayStation-branded phone would be in the works, so its launch might never happen in the end, though his words will certainly give some hope to those who have been expecting for such a device to emerge.

According to the news on the web, what Sony Ericsson and Sony would have to do to the PSP phone would be to make it compatible with all the games for the PlayStation, while also offering mobile versions of the titles for download. In case the device would also look attractive enough, with touchscreen capabilities and a slim form factor, the success of the idea would then be tremendous.

On the other hand, nothing consistent has been offered this time either, and the PSP phone might remain a rumor after all, though a long-lasting one, we must agree. Hopefully, the mobile phone maker will consider this as an option to return to profitability after some huge losses it has reported during the last few quarters, and a lot of the mobile users around the world will have a great reason to rejoice

PlayStation Phone: spec analysis

It's not really about the tech - it's about the buttons. Based on the PSP Phone specs leaked by Chinese site IT268 and mulled over by Engadget, the PlayStation Phone is a reasonably powerful but not barnstorming performer. However, the inclusion of a PSP-style controller setup means that the gameplay experience is going to be radically different, and perhaps more appealing to the core gamer, as a matter of course.
The IT268 leak suggests a device fairly close to the PSPgo in terms of form factor, taking the form of a typical touch-screen phone but with a slide-out controller array featuring a PSP-style d-pad and buttons plus a curious "strip" for touch-powered analogue control using two thumbs.
The screen is a 4" LCD with an 854x480 resolution - a considerable upgrade from the PSP's 480x272, but still some way off the standard set by iPhone 4's 960x640 "Retina" display. Other elements outed in the leak include a five megapixel camera with LED flash, microSD support (in a Sony phone?), 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM and a 1,500mAh battery.
In terms of the main processor, a Snapdragon QSD8255 runs the show according to IT268. This is a complete system on chip (SoC) similar to the assembly of parts that make up Apple's A4 processor, including CPU and graphics tech. It also contains the silicon required to connect to the GSM network along with a whole range of data-based protocols from GPRS up to HSPA+. The CPU itself is a Qualcomm Scorpian, based on an ARMv7 core - running at 1GHz.
Graphics-wise, the QSD8255 features an Adreno 205 graphics core - radically improved over its 200 predecessor and up there with the best single-core GPUs made by Apple supplier IMG. Independent, though somewhat incomplete tests have put it within spitting distances of IMG's SGX540, found in the Samsung Galaxy S.
The QSD8255 is nothing new, however. It is an off-the-shelf part already used by existing phones such as the HTC Desire HD, but it is clearly a very capable performer reaching towards the top end of current smartphone technology. The PlayStation Phone, based on Android, should work very well indeed running current games specific to that OS and if, as suspected, Sony is working on titles specific to the phone, the platform holder will have the benefit of being able to tailor the games to that exact device configuration, leading to performance gains on its own.
However, just what kind of development commitment Sony will give to the phone remains uncertain. It may well be that the company is looking to address a more casual gaming market here while the forthcoming PSP2 will target its existing audience.
Uncertainty surrounds the make-up of the phone's PlayStation Pocket, app which presumably houses the phone-specific games and the portal you download them from. In the past Engadget has talked about a new "ecosystem" designed in collaboration with Google, who are responsible for the Android OS that powers the phone. However, it does remain questionable whether this is likely bearing in mind that Sony has its own well-established infrastructure in the form of the PlayStation Network. If there is no PSN support, questions really need to be asked about just how involved and how invested PlayStation brand holder SCE is with the new phone.
Questions also remain about how this new device will sit within the PlayStation device hierarchy. Apple has had this established since day one - the iPod Touch range is a subset of the iPhone range. The Touch does almost everything the phone does, apart from connect to a cellular network. So what's the deal with the PlayStation Phone?
The spec is significantly behind what has been previously mooted for the new PSP2. It clearly does not support its unique rear touchpad, and it's almost certainly running a completely different OS, so the notion that it is a non-cellular PSP2 equivalent seems to be something of a non-starter. PSone titles could be run on the phone under emulation, but this makes the 854x480 screen a pointless waste of time. Emulating the two 333MHz chips within the PSP is beyond the scope of the leaked spec.
Our sources tell us that existing PSP titles will be ported to the phone which makes much more sense, but this introduces its own challenges: firstly it requires a substantial investment from Sony in bringing over its flagship titles, and secondly it means that third-party publishers will need to splash the cash in order to port over their existing catalogue of PSP titles.
The PlayStation Phone looks like an interesting, if somewhat unremarkable piece of hardware. It's down to the games to convince us of its prospects

PlayStation Phone: Which Carrier?

CNET Analysis: With rumors that the PlayStation Phone will be released in the spring 2011 , there are a number of questions that need to be answered. However, the one that has been burning in my mind is which carrier will get Sony Ericsson’s newest handset in the U.S? We already know that the PS Phone is a GSM handset, but that has not stopped rumors that Verizon will get it as well. The issue here is that the phone maker will need to make a CDMA version as well, which is certainly a possibility. However, what about T-Mobile and Sprint, surely it is in Sony Ericsson’s best interest to make this almost like a Samsung Galaxy S, and make it available to all the major North American wireless phone carriers? There is no doubt that the PlayStation Phone will be after some iPhone market share, so it is imperative that it is launched on more than one carrier – especially as Apple’s smartphone will be launched on Big Red next month. If not, then the PS Phone might just fade into the background. We are not certain why the handset was not seen at CES 2011, but maybe Sony Ericsson is waiting for WDC next month? For those who have not seen the handset yet, then visit our recent post where we have a video of it in action for you. We also have another video for you here offering you a game demo being played on the PlayStation Phone. Which carrier do you think will get the PlayStation Phone? ps phone

According to this hongkong-based forum, the validity of the existence of the Playstation Phone is very real and in fact, it would be under the Xperia-branded series and this one would be infused by a a 1GHz Snapdragon QSD8255 proceossor  with a Qualcomm Adreno 205 for Graphics module. Packing along with that is a generous battery power which could last for 6-10 hours under a 1,5000mAh unit. Rumor also states this one will be under a 4-inch LCD device (854 x 480) screen resolution, 5MP camera W/ LED flash, 512MB/512MB ROM, microSD / microUSD port. Interestingly, new score reveals this one got an all-time high score of 1,733 which is better than its previous handling last year. In addition to that, this one will  its own App called as the “Playstation Pocket App” which would be like the device’s game launcher.
Take note, this PS Phone also has another name like . Also, one shouldn’t mix this with the  device which has already debuted at the CES today or with the  device (another rumored device). Dang! Until how long will you make us wait Sony?

ps phone

Your comment about apple having this market locked down does partially annoy me. WP7 and Android will be on par within the year. Apple hasn't anything locked down...except its nanny OS.

Hope i havn't annoyed you too much!

Well you say it will catch up however I'm not so sure, the infrastructure of the app store is far larger, 150,000 apps compared to the 20,000 plus on android, both will continue to improve.
Currently the games are so much better compared to the android, my brother for example has bomberman, street fighter 4, pro evo, fifa on his iphone4 while im stuck with wanky angry birds and those stupid soundboards.

The average user doesn't know about tech specs, emulators and the other potentially cool features of android.
Let be brutality honest, the stability of android is nowhere as stable iphone4's software.
How many times has your android temporally frozen? I know my desire has, plenty-full times.

I think apple will continue to dominate for this simple reason alone and that's awareness.
My brother has bought an iphone4 because he thinks its cool (his first smart phone), my manager just bought an ipad for his own xmas present. My cousin wants an iphone because his black berry doesn't cut the mustard while my co-worker had to ask me what the hell android is as he simply didnt have a clue. (thought it was a software programme).

Amongst the average person who isn't into tech, who wants a 'cool' phone that hits all the features, they think apple. I hope this changes, really I do.

But these people are the lion share of the market, not you or me.(sadly).

I do agree that Android's current model is confusing and Apple have the marketing of Gods quite frankly, but Androids shear growth should make it a target for developers whether the lower end devices can run them or not. Microsoft would get my money for taking the fight to Apple in a big way by the end of next year. Granted WP7 is early days, and as it stands is not for me but considering they are rumoured too have update number 2 out by CES in February those boys are pushing hard to get back into the market they so grossly slept on during the Windows Mobile years. Maybe they will be the one's too put a controller on a phone and do it right?

PlayStation Phone sized up

now this is getting ridiculous. It's been literally less than 48 hours since we saw the first in-depth Chinese-language preview of Sony's still yet-to-be-confirmed PlayStation Phone, and believe it or not, we've got another one. (Our resident translator Richard Lai suggests this might be the same PS Phone just being passed around the various websites.) It's just as long and arguably just as in-depth with an absolute ton of comparison pics with the PSP Go, the Xperia lineup, a DSi, a Droid... the list goes on. Much of what's written is the same, and the PlayStation Pocket app is still a mystery. The preview does say a third-party emulator was downloaded and tested, with 70 percent success, but that doesn't actually tell us anything. Anyway, even if you don't know Chinese, hit up the source and bask in the glory of a ton more pics.

ps phone the best

The PlayStation Phone - somehow still unconfirmed by Sony - may pack a punch at least three times stronger than PSPgo.
Inside the new device is a 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM and a Qualcomm Adreno 205 graphics chip, according to Engadget's roundup of a Hong Kong forum-based leak
The screen measures four inches, apparently, and can pump out a resolution of 854x480 pixels.
The PSPgo, on the other hand, has a 333MHz CPU, 64MB RAM and a 3.8 inch screen capable of a 480x272 resolution.
In short, the PlayStation Phone gives it some welly, although the two systems' inner-workings aren't directly comparable.
That's because the PlayStation Phone is a phone, lest we forget - one with a 5 megapixel camera, front-and-back microphones, 512MB ROM, microSD slot, micro-USB connection and a touch-screen for navigation and, you know, dialling phone numbers.
Games, meanwhile, will be launched through a PlayStation Pocket menu. Could this be the true name of the phone?
Sony was expected to announce the PlayStation Phone at the ideally-positioned Consumer Electronics Show 2011 this week, but it didn't.
All eyes now turn to the Game Developers Conference 2011, which starts 28th February in San Francisco.

Hopes were high that Sony Computer Entertainment head honcho Kaz Hirai would unveil the not-so-secret PlayStation Phone during Sony's CES keynote; however, instead of pulling the portable out of his pocket, he gave us the next best thing ... a tease. Hirai teased that Sony's "strategy encompasses driving the development of a variety of new strategic products and services including tablets currently in development as well as smartphones, all the while of course integrating the know-how and the assets that we've accumulated from our PlayStation business."

What does that mean? It sounds like the PlayStation Phone is just part of the plan to leverage the PlayStation branding and games for Sony's other products. He continued, "In 2011, you will start to see an implementation of a strategy we've developed and continually refined over the past 18 months. And you will see this strategy executed in the form of great new products and services coming to market that leverage Sony's strongest assets. In addition to launching a line of Sony tablets, we'll be building upon the video, music, game and book offerings on our Qriocity and our PlayStation Network services to deliver a compelling, unique experience for Sony across a wide range of consumer electronic devices."
